Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN)
Foreword:
Established in 2008 and based temporarily in Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, IIT Gandhinagar is one of the new IITs started by Indian Ministry of HRD. The pioneer batch is passing out in April 2012. The institute aims to provide the best quality of education and morals to all its students and for the same reason, the faculty recruitment is very strict and the recruited faculty are one of the best in their own fields. The institute as of now has Chemical, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering departments in the undergraduate level. Graduate and post graduate courses are also being offered.
Location:
As of now, the operations are held in a temporary campus (Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Ahmedabad). The permanent land is obtained and the construction is yet to start on the river banks of Sabarmati River. The permanent campus stretches 450 acres with Sabarmati River on one side and lush green forest type cultivation on the other side. Nearly 20 min from the Ahmedabad international airport, the campus is well connected with the main city of Ahmedabad.
Campus and Infrastructure:
All the academic and administrative blocks are air conditioned along with Wi-fi facility in the whole campus. There are two sets of hostels (In campus and off campus). In campus, there are boys and girls hostel and the off campus hostel is only for boys. The off campus hostel is just across the road from the college (walk-able distance). Library is fast growing and is also air conditioned and has wifi facility. All the labs are new and meet international standards. The institute takes utmost care regarding the education and infrastructure.

Faculty:
Most of the faculty at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, are recruited after a very tough screening procedure and the recruited faculty are one of the best in their own fields. Most of the faculty are very experienced and had previously taught in tier-1 US universities.
Crowd:
Boy/Girl ratio is same as any other IIT. “Guys, don’t expect much”, says a disheartened boy with a fake smile. The crowd comes from across the country. Students from Assam, Kerala, Jammu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and almost every nook and corner of India is seen at IIT Gandhinagar. It has all the cultures possible and the students celebrate all the festivals with equal enthusiasm and zeal. Common festivals like Holi, Diwali have already etched their memories in the present students which they will cherish for the ages to come.
Rankings:
The institute is not yet ranked as the pioneer batch is yet to pass out. Typically from the past four years the trend has been such that, JEE rank upto 3700 can get in (General Category)
Placements and Internships:
Well, this might surprise you and could be very enticing for any IIT aspirant. IIT Gandhinagar is the only IIT where 25% of the strength got foreign internships in their second year of under graduation. Despite this enormously huge point, the placement standards are way below the Bombay, Delhi and Madras campus. Over the years, the institution can reach the top notch level. At least, students believe so.
Festivals and Activities:
Annual cultural festival - Blithchron and technical festival – Amalthea are the two primary festivals at IIT Gandhinagar. Other than these two, the college organizes intra college tech fest week, Halla bol - intra college sports fest, Jashn - Intra college Cultural festival.
Note: Only IIT in the whole country to organize a inter college cultural festival in its year of inception. Blithchron grew to be one of the biggest cultural festivals of Gujarat.
Canteen/Mess:
The mess food is decent and boasts of many cuisines. Chinese, South Indian and North Indian are mostly served. Hostel canteen runs from 11 am to 3 am (night). There are many hang out places in Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad which can be easily reached from here. Himalaya mall, Alpha one, Acropolis, ZK, Happinezz, Havmor to name a few.

Verdict:
The excellent environment for intellectual development and the student driven activities going on in the campus through out the calendar makes the student not only fit educationally but also gives and overall exposure to the student making him/her ready for the corporate and academic world. IIT Gandhinagar has probably all the qualities to reach the top tier of engineering colleges in the country.
